As many of you reading this already know, we are getting married. We are both very excited. This is our story.
We met in our capstone advertising class at BYU. In this class we were put into groups where we had to design a campaign for Haagen Dazs ice-cream. We were put onto the same team. I (Bergen) was interested in Caitlyn right away. I thought Caitlyn was so beautiful. I thought why would a girl like that want to date a dork like me. (Caitlyn told me the other day that she wrote about me in her journal about one of our first encounters, before we were dating, and she said I was dorky.) During the first couple days of class I would strategically park in a lot on campus were I could walk Caitlyn home after class. I wanted to ask her on a date and finally got the courage to do so. I asked her to come to a bon fire with me over the weekend. She said that she had plans visiting her sister who was just about to have a baby. I thought I was shut down but I decided to be persistant.
About a week later I asked her if she wanted to come to the Art museum with me. She said yes and we were having such a good time together at the Art museum we went to J Dawgs (great hotdogs) and then to a movie at the dollar theatre. It was a great date and I was liking Caitlyn more and more. We went out a couple more times after that and it seemed pretty clear that things were going well. I heard that she was going to her sisters house in Pocatello and was driving up with her other sister but was planning on taking the bus back. I made up a lie that I was planning on already visiting my best friend Nathan in Rexburg (I had a great time) and could gladly take her to provo on my way back. I think that was a good move because I was able to have her all to myself for a couple hours on the drive back to Provo and I met her whole family. I knew she was not completely sold on me yet but this really helped.
We continued courtship and I knew right way that Caitlyn was the girl for me. She has those qualities that I love and I knew I needed to step up my game. I asked her to come to my house for thanksgiving and she did. Road trips can really make or break a relationship but we had so much fun together on that trip. I think we both realized that we were in love and that we could make each other very happy. While I was home with her in Seattle we decided that an engagement should be the next step. I quickly started looking the perfect ring. She wanted a halo of diamonds around a center diamond and she favored the vintage look. Well you can see for yourself (above) that we found the perfect ring.
The hardest part was finding the right time to ask her to marry me. She got sick right after I bought the ring and I didn't want to ask her until she was better. My birthday was coming up and although I didn't favor asking her on my birthday the time just felt right for it. I took her to a park were we had one of our first dates. It was the date were we had held hands for the first time. We walked up to the playground and it was raining. I told her how much I loved her and how I hardly had the right words to express (which is strangely out of character for me because I always have something to say). I told her my birthday would not be complete if I didn't ask her to marry me. I got on one knee and asked her. She said yes, and we hugged and kissed (mushy) and then she looked at the ring (the one she wanted). We talked for a few minutes longer but it was rainy and cold so we went back home to spread the news. It was really cute to see Caitlyn smiling so much. She said that her face was going to hurt from smiling so much. I was smiling quite a bit as well. It was the best birthday I had ever had. Well, I am sure more details will follow as we get ready for the wedding but we thought would share our story. Maybe I can get Caitlyn's side of things on the blog soon so stay tuned!
CONGRATULATIONS again! My brother in law proposed to my sister on his birthday as well. She had no idea. Just thought they were going out for his birthday. So, good plan.
